The VA Offers 3 Grant Programs:

Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) Grant

The Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) Grant assists in home modifications. The SAH Grant is designed to provide a barrier–free living environment that allows disability–related adaptations to be made to the home. This grant is currently limited to $63,780 and can be used to construct or modify a home to meet specific needs. The grant is available to veterans and service members entitled to disability compensation for permanent and total disability due to:

  • loss or loss of use of both lower extremities
  • blindness in both eyes with light perception plus loss or loss of use of one lower extremity
  • loss or loss of use of one lower extremity with the loss or loss of use of one upper extremity
  • loss or loss of use of both upper extremities
  • severe burn injury.

Special Home Adaptation (SHA) Grant

Eligibility for the Special Home Adaptation Grant is available to veterans and service members who are and will be entitled to disability compensation for:

  • permanent and total disability due to blindness in both eyes with 5/200 visual acuity or less
  • the anatomical loss or loss of use of both hands or extremities below the elbow
  • or a severe burn injury (as so determined)

Home Improvements and Structural Alterations (HISA) Grant

The Home Improvements and Structural Alterations (HISA) Grant is available through the Department of Veterans Affairs. This grant is available for both service–connected and non-service-connected veterans and provides assistance for any home improvements necessary for the continuation of treatment or for disability access to the home and essential lavatory and sanitary facilities. Up to $6,800 may be provided to service–connected veterans and up to $2,000 may be provided to nonservice–connected veterans.
